Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...

Anatomical Study of the Fibularis Longus Muscle Motor Points and Electrical Stimulation Therapy Application International Journal of Morphology
Méndez Rebolledo,Guillermo; Coronado Gallardo,Roberto; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
The fibularis longus muscle (FLM) has an important role in the movement of eversion of the foot and in maintaining the plantar arch. The electrostimulation procedures seek to maintain muscle trophism, increase strength and endurance, and are frequently used in physiotherapy, for which the clinician needs to know the location of the motor points of the FLM. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the number and distribution of motor points of the FLM and relate them to observable parameters in the surface anatomy. Ten formalin-preserved limbs were used, and the lateral regions of the leg were dissected in detail. In all the cases, the muscle presented three fascicular patterns, the superior and anteroinferior fascicles presented two motor...

Clinical Evaluation of Fibularis Tertius Muscle Prevalence International Journal of Morphology
Ramirez,Daysi; Gajardo,Carolina; Caballero,Paula; Zavando,Daniela; Cantín,Mario; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
The fibularis tertius muscle (FTM) in man has been developed over time to acquire subsequent bipedal gait. The FTM functions as a crucial contributor in dorsiflexion and eversion, postulated over the years as a stabilizer of the talocrural joint, avoiding forced investment and protecting the anterior talofibular ligament. The literature describes that FTM is absent in 10% of cases, with no data on Chilean population. A study of surface anatomy in 168 young subjects, 60% female and 40% male students at the Universidad de Talca, Chile, with a mean age of 20.6 ± 1.68 years, was conducted. The presence of FTM was identified following the implementation of a clinical assessment protocol that determines the presence of muscle on the basis of a progression called...

Easy and Unbiased Determination of the Maxillary Sinus Volume International Journal of Morphology
Coronado,Cesar; Arriagada,Oscar; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
Determining the volume of the maxillary sinus is necessary in certain procedures. We present a simple method for estimating the volume of the maxillary sinus from groups 3, 5 and 9 coronal CT scan using the Cavalieri method combined with systematic sampling and evaluated randomized images. We used 10 dry skulls submitted to the TC. The actual volume was determined using silicone adapted to the maxillary sinus cavity. The estimated volume showed a high correlation with real volume, with no differences between groups. We concluded that it is possible to estimate without bias and with high accuracy the volume of the maxillary sinus from a minimum of 3 CT images obtained through randomized systematic sampling and the proposed method.

Evaluation of Facial Asymmetry Using Soft-Tissue Thickness for Forensic Purposes International Journal of Morphology
Torres Muñoz,Sebastián René; Cantín,Mario; Pérez Rojas,Francisco Javier; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
Facial reconstruction for forensic sculpture aims to reproduce the face of an individual for identification. This technique is based on the knowledge of the facial soft-tissue thickness, which differs in terms of sexual dimorphism. However, in terms of asymmetry, the real significance of the soft-tissue thickness on both sides of the face is not considered to make an approximation of the morphofacial characteristics of an individual. This study analyzed the facial tissue thickness of 32 adult Spanish corpses of both sexes in six bilateral cephalometric landmarks through the needle puncture technique, comparing the measurements of right and left sides. No significant differences were found when comparing the soft-tissue thickness on the right and left sides...
